... of Automobiles

Jan 6/05: Auto fascination is as ever strong. Over the holidays came this lovely, Vanderbilt running back killed over 'trash talk' about cars, that regarding a 1:30 a.m. outside-the-club (but of course) argument over the better car. Here was one argument that ought never have started: the perps escaped in an orange Infiniti. Yes, people identify themselves and others by their automobiles, orange ones included.

The theory tested out perfectly by Karl Rove & Co., which during the election tracked Bush supporters by consumer tastes. As reported by London's Telegraph:

Bush was 're-elected by Porsche drivers'
Using market research more normally reserved for the launch of a new soap powder or soft drink, they drew up a database indicating the likely political persuasion of every consumer, based on car brands, hobbies and favourite television programmes .... Their research told them that the most Republican car marques were Porsche, followed by Jaguar, Land Rover, and General Motors. Other luxury car-makers that scored well among conservatives were Audi, Lexus and Jeep.

Note that they didn't go looking for Volvo drivers:

Volvo, Subaru and Volkswagen owners showed a strong Democratic bias. In general, Middle Americans favoured [UK speak] US-built vehicles.

While this ought surprise no one, proof of the wisdom comes today from loony protest in Washington over certification in Congress of the electoral college vote. As recorded by a citizen reporter from FreeRepublic.com, a rally speaker actually said that he aimed to mail word of his protest to 20,000 Volvo owners, for,

"If you're smart enough to buy a Volvo, you're smart enough to know Bush stole the election."

The rally was organized by, among folks, Jessie Jackson. I'm guessing he doesn't drive a Volvo.
