Back from another amazing NYC trip. The g*rlfriend invited the boy and the 'rentals up for Turkey Day bird and the NYC holiday windows. And we had a lovely time of it. I, of course, loved our wild cab ride best of all. The guy was insane! First getting to us, he took to our curb from three lanes out and cut off two bretheren, one of whom nearly had to leave marks to keep from a Sixth Avenue shakeup. Once in, the three in back, me up front, he didn't even ask "where to" before the right-foot slam -- cruising to the left -- the LEFT! -- of another cabbie that was picking up passengers just off the far left lane, leaving just under the width of our car to get by. And, of course, we got by like a perfect throw between defenders. No more obstacles up the Ave, except, perhaps, two yellows, one red, a horse and buggy on 59th by the Park. Each was avoided with brilliance -- and that tremendous and mean right foot. Then there was Columbus Circle itself, which proved a mere annoyance to our taxicab artiste. I didn't once think of putting on my seatbelt, and by the time we got to destination at 9th Ave & 59th St., I was in rapture and awe. No need to explain more than a "right side, far corner," than this ace shot through traffic and laid us upon the curb at the bullseye. Fare: $5.60. I fished out a twenty and said keep it all. He looked at me with genuine care, and said,
God bless New York. Here for previous entry |
